چکیده

Powering desalination by waste heat is often proposed to mitigate energy consumption and environmental impact; however, thorough technology comparisons are lacking in the literature. This work numerically models the efficiency of six representative desalination technologies powered by waste heat at 50, 70, 90, and 120 ◦C, where applicable. Entropy generation and Second Law efficiency analysis are applied for the systems and their components. The technologies considered are thermal desalination by multistage flash (MSF), multiple effect distillation (MED), multistage vacuum membrane distillation (MSVMD), humidification-dehumidification (HDH), and organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) paired with mechanical technologies of reverse osmosis (RO) and mechanical vapor compression (MVC). The most efficient technology was RO, followed by MED. Performances among MSF, MSVMD, and MVC were similar but the relative performance varied with waste heat temperature or system size. Entropy generation in thermal technologies increases at lower waste heat temperatures largely in the feed or brine portions of the various heat exchangers used. This occurs largely because lower temperatures reduce recovery, increasing the relative flow rates of feed and brine. However, HDH (without extractions) had the reverse trend, only being competitive at lower temperatures. For the mechanical technologies, the energy efficiency only varies with temperature because of the significant losses from the ORC. Entropy 2015, 17 7531

MHD Natural Convection and Entropy Generation of Variable Properties Nanofluid in a Triangular Enclosure

Natural convection heat transfer has many applications in different fields of industry; such as cooling industries, electronic transformer devices and ventilation equipment; due to simple process, economic advantage, low noise and renewed retrieval. Recently, heat transfer of nanofluids have been considered because of higher thermal conductivity coefficient compared with those of ordinary fluid...

Irreversibility Analysis of MHD Buoyancy-Driven Variable Viscosity Liquid Film along an Inclined Heated Plate Convective Cooling

Analysis of intrinsic irreversibility and heat transfer in a buoyancy-driven changeable viscosity liquid along an incline heated wall with convective cooling taking into consideration the heated isothermal and isoflux wall is investigated. By Newton’s law of cooling, we assumed the free surface exchange heat with environment and fluid viscosity is exponentially dependent on temperature. Appropr...

Entropy Generation Minimization of a Heat and Mass Exchanger for Use in a Humidification - Dehumidification Desalination System

The physical mechanisms of entropy generation in a condenser with high fractions of noncondensable gases are examined using control volume, scaling, and boundary layer techniques, with the aim of defining a criterion for minimum entropy generation rate that is useful in engineering analyses. This process is particularly relevant in humidification-dehumidification desalination systems, where min...

Investigation of the Slipping Wear based on the Rate of Entropy Generation

Wear is a complicated phenomenon caused by the relative movement of two contacting surfaces compressed together by a normal force. Prediction of the wear, in most cases, requires various experiments and microstructural characterization of the contacting surfaces. Mathematical models based on physical concepts could provide considerable help in understanding the physical behavior and hence the p...

Inherent Irreversibility of Exothermic Chemical Reactive Third-Grade Poiseuille Flow of a Variable Viscosity with Convective Cooling

In this study, the analysis of inherent irreversibility of chemical reactive third-grade poiseuille flow of a variable viscosity with convective cooling is investigated. The dissipative heat in a reactive exothermic chemical moves over liquid in an irreversible way and the entropy is produced unceasingly in the system within the fixed walls. The heat convective exchange with the surrounding tem...
